Glassblower

Growing up in rural Wisconsin, my journey into the world of visual arts began in high school through a ceramics program. This early exposure sparked a deep passion for ceramics, which I decided to pursue professionally. After high school, I enrolled at the Art Institute of Chicago, where I discovered a range of artistic mediums that broadened my creative expression.

Post-graduation, I had the privilege of working with Joel Huntley at Wisconsin Pottery for a decade. Joel’s mentorship in slip trailing, sgraffito, and colonial reproductions was pivotal in shaping my appreciation for ceramics and taught me the nuances of working in a studio setting.

In 2012, seeking new challenges, I moved to St. Petersburg, Florida, for a ceramics residency at Craftsman House Gallery. It was there that I met glass artist Duncan McClellan, and my fascination with glass began. I began exchanging work at his gallery and hot shop, quickly falling in love with the intensity of glassblowing. The process of shaping molten glass, with its unique blend of speed and control, captivated me, and I was amazed by its diverse textures and colors. The collaborative nature of glassblowing also resonated with me, as I thrive in team-oriented environments.

My exploration didn’t end with glass. In 2013, I joined MGA Sculpture Studio, where I expanded my skills to include metalwork, mold-making, rubber, and fiberglass sculpture. This experience enriched my artistic repertoire and allowed me to blend techniques from ceramics and glassblowing into innovative new forms.

As a house gaffer at the Morean Hot Shop, I continued to refine my glassblowing skills and discovered that my ceramic techniques and artistic ideas translated beautifully to glass. This cross-medium exploration has led to a creative resurgence, allowing me to push boundaries and explore new artistic avenues.

In my work, I seek to blend humor and adventure through shape, form, color, and pattern. My sculptures often take on anamorphic qualities, showcasing distinctive characters and strong presences. Recently, I have also delved into political art, channeling my emotions about our current social climate into my creations. Art provides a vital escape and a way to process the world around us.

I am committed to continuing my exploration of different mediums, subjects, and techniques to fully realize my potential as an artist and contribute positively to society.
